A wave of incredible music dropped over the past few weeks. Here are a few for your ear holes.

Johnny Marfa & The Ligths — “One More Cup”

A slow, building waltz about painful love lost and rampant self-medication has clearly been on repeat at the Country Cutler Ranch since it dropped last week. My kids are jumping around the house singing the hook. This banger has become my go-to windows-down-driving-alone-screaming-along song. While I’ve been lucky not to know much about losing love, I can always go for another cup of coffee. This is the first slow-song single off their recently announced album, Take Me Back to Texas, out January 17. It shows range and skill. It’s also really good.

Rah Rah Rabbit - “What it Means”

The Rabbit strikes again. For years, I’ve been blown away by the style, lyrical approach and musicality of Rah Rah Rabbit. An LA local with a hard-to-pin-down sound, Rabbit does great things with a country beat and auxiliary strings — banjos, fiddles, slide guitars (oh, my). In this track, the fiddle feels like an entire horn section (which would be wonderful, too). What strikes me about all of her work is the size of the sound. Check out this song, which is out now on Blackbird Record Label.

Tony Kamel - “Sue”

This guy and his story songs get me every time. While we’ve never met in person, I feel like we’ve known each other for a long time, partly because he told me many good stories in his songs. Are they true? Does it matter? I love a great story, and it’s one of the main reasons I love country music. The ability to provide a glimpse of a time, a place or a person — real or imagined — in a way that makes the subject seem worthy of historical documentation. And Kamel nails this in his writing. While “The Sufer” remains one of my absolute favorite songs ever, “Sue” has the potential to join Kamel's other story song on my list of top bangers.

Until next Tuesday, whenever that may be!
